We will check out from the Wilderness Hotel in the morning and take a two minute drive up the road to the Siida museum of the Finnish Sámi people. Siida is a central meeting place in Inari, the heart of the Sámi Area in Finland. It is a window to the Sámi culture and the diverse nature of Northern Lapland and where you can enjoy the exhibitions on culture, art and nature.
After the museum tour, we will travel to Wild Spirit Safari Park, Animal Rescue Center. There we will meet the owner, Tiina, who is an inspiration to all things good and kind in this world. Tiina will introduce us to her collection of Arctic Foxes, Racoon Dogs, Wild Boars and Huskies. All of whom are rescued and kept safe in the park. We will enjoy some tea and coffee around a warm hearth inside a cosy hut while Tiina will tell us stories of the animals both past and present.
From there we head south toward Ivalo and onto Saariselkä where, after a lovely lunch, we’ll enjoy a toboggan ride down the ski slopes of Saariselkä ski resort.
Saariselkä’s ski resort is the most northern resort in Europe. Tobogganing is the easiest way to enjoy the slopes as it requires no prior knowledge of skiing or skating. A perfect way for the whole family and for people of all abilities to enjoy a fun-filled ride!
To finish the active day we embark on the tails of our four-legged athletes. Just a short drive and we will arrive at the Husky Safari Center, where a super friendly team of dog lovers will have their dogs take us on a ride. This will be your opportunity to be both pilot and passenger aboard the sled as the dogs sprint us off into the wintery distance. A full “all-you-need-to-know” introduction will be given and (you’ll learn for yourself), the controls are easy-peasy. At the end of our ride we will have the opportunity to meet the dogs and thank them for their hard work before we sit around a warm fire and enjoy some lovely salmon soup.
In the evening you will have the opportunity to experience a true Finnish tradition, Sauna. Sauna is very much about being in the moment. As an environment, it’s one that denies distractions like social media, encouraging the virtue of presence. If you are feeling brave, you can take a dip in “avanto”, the hole in the ice!
We’ll be on stand-by to alert you to any Auroras that might be overhead as we enter into the evening.
